Our Values and Ethos statement

During the Spring term of 2018, we explored different Christian values in worship time which led to  children, Governors, parents and staff participating in a “Values day” on May 23rd, culminating in a democratic vote in which the school community chose the Christian values of LOVE & RESPECT as our core values. We have threaded these values through all aspects of school life and continue to encourage all children and staff to embrace and demonstrate these values whilst at Horwich Parish and beyond.

An Ethos group made up of staff, children, Governors and parents looked at changing how our school was represented in line with our new core values. The children worked together to design a new school logo representing the two core values.  Final Logo .jpg

Our aim is to see LOVE and RESPECT demonstrated in all aspects of life in our school community. We believe our core values underpin many of the other Christian values. Exploring different Christian values together enables the children to consider each value from a Biblical perspective through our whole school worship sessions, and then during class worship, opportunities are created for discussion and reflection as how we see these in action in everyday lives, and the difference they can make both to individuals and the wider community.  Children are given additional opportunities to reflect on these values further as they explore the lives of key Biblical characters and key events in their RE lessons. Comparing these with other world faiths also demonstrates how important these values are to all religions.

We also use Picture News as an additional worship resource which allows the children to discuss key world issues and relate them to our values, and to find opportunities to ‘let their light shine’ by making their contribution to issues important to them, e.g. writing letters to local MPs or raising money for charities/ people in need.

Ethos statement
As a Church of England school, we have also adopted a distinct ethos statement:

Recognising its historic foundation, the school will preserve and develop its religious character in accordance with the principles of the Church at parish and diocesan level.

The school aims to serve its community by providing education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice. It encourages an understanding of the meaning and significance of faith and promotes Christian values through the experience it offers all its pupils

We encourage the children to find ways to demonstrate these values in action. Horwich Parish has always been very involved in helping others within our local community and both nationally and internationally. The pandemic has impacted lives in so many different ways and, yet in a time where many families are worrying about job and financial security, our school community contributed more items for our Harvest appeal for Urban Outreach, one of our local foodbanks, than ever before. We are aware of needs within our communities and are playing our part to make a difference.
