Horwich Parish Primary Logo v2Harvest Service

Thank you for your support of our service last Friday. From the sale and auction of allotment produce we also managed to raise over £50 as a donation to Winterwatch. Thank you to all those who donated items also.

Supporting your child in the New Curriculum – open evening

You may be aware that all children are now following a new curriculum and schools do not use a system of levelling, which parents may have just have got their heads round. The expectations now for children are significantly higher than in previous years, especially as the children move into Year 3 onwards. For example a child in Year 4 is now expected to demonstrate skills which would previously have been equivalent to someone working in Year 6.

To help you understand the details of the new curriculum and the terminology we will be using to discuss your child’s progress, and also to help you see the standards which are required for your child in their classrooms, we are offering an open evening for you to wonder round your child’s classroom and listen to a talk in the hall at various times. This will be on Wednesday 4th November 4-5:30 pm.

Parents’ Evening

Don’t forget Parents’ evening will be held on the 11th November 3:30-6pm. Letters will be coming out this week. Some children will receive information in letter form and text about attending a structured conversation instead, so we can share the support put into place for your child this term. This means you will not need to attend the Parents’ Evening as well.

Supporting reading with your child

When you look in your child’s reading book you will see there is a sticker stuck into their reading diary to show you the main skill the group is working on in their guided reading session over a number of sessions. During the Local Authority review comments were made on our reading links at home. We know lots of parents write short comments after listening to their children read. Please could we ask parents to sign their child’s diary or make a short comment when they have

listened to them read, or asked them to read independently. We really appreciate your support as we know that you take the time where possible to listen to your child read. We would then be able to show this aspect when the Local Authority return in February. Thank you very much for your support.

Calling on the dads

We are trying to show some of our boys that reading is a valuable tool and can be fun. We would love it if any dads could offer some time before picking up their child to listen to some of our boys read. Please email Mrs Washington (awashington@horwichparish.net ) or just let Mrs Worthington or Mrs Wilson know. Thank you so much.

Parent Governor

Horwich Parish CE Primary School

13th October 2015

Dear Parent/Guardian

GOVERNING BODY OF HORWICH PARISH CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

I am writing to let you know that a vacancy has arisen for one parent governor, and that a new parent governor must be elected by the parents of registered pupils at the school.

The election will be conducted within 28 days of the closing date for nominations. Parents will be able to vote by post or, if they prefer, by returning ballot papers to the school through a registered pupil at the school. Candidates may also wish to hold meetings to address parents. If such a meeting is held, voting by a show of hands cannot take place then, but parents may take the opportunity to return their completed ballot papers. (Ballot papers will not be issued at the meeting.)

I am asking you to consider standing in the election or nominating someone else to stand. Before completing the attached nomination form, please remember that:

(a) the person nominated must be a parent of a pupil registered at the school;

(b) the person nominated must sign the form to show that he/she is willing to be a Governor;

(c) each person nominated must be proposed by a parent;

(d) each parent is entitled to vote and to propose a nomination;

(e) all nominations must be returned to school by 4.00 p.m. on Thursday 22nd October

All newly elected and re-elected governors are now subject to a pre-appointment check. To ensure from the outset that candidates are eligible and prepared to undergo a pre-appointment check, before the election takes place all candidates will be asked to read and sign a Pre-appointment Declaration of Eligibility form. After the election, the successful candidate will have to undergo a check so that the LA can ensure they are not on the lists of persons barred from working with children and vulnerable adults.

I hope these understandable precautions do not deter any genuinely interested parent/carer from coming forward. If you are considering standing in the election and would like some more information (on the work involved in being a Governor, for example) please do not hesitate to contact me. You might also like to talk to one of the current governors about the role, and I can arrange this.

Yours sincerely,

A. Beedie

Football News!

It was a busy football week…

On Thursday 8th October the Football A Team took part in a tournament. Unfortunately one team dropped out last minute so they only got to play 2 matches but the team won both convincingly beating Blackrod Church 7-1 and St Mary’s 6-1. Well done to the whole team.

On Friday 9th October our Year 4 team played against Blackrod Church. They fought bravely but unfortunately lost the match 5-1.

Local Authority Review

Last week we had a visit from Bolton authority to review the progress in particular areas in school. We are pleased to share that the school has made good progress in all of the areas identified and just needs to continue over time. We know that our school community has the vision outlined above at the heart of all we do.

Sponsored spell

We have invited the NSPCC to speak to the children about their work in supporting children in need, and also to explain about the Childline service. As part of the awareness raising for NSPCC, all the children in Years 1 – 6 are invited to take part in a sponsored spell. The children will be taking home a leaflet with a series of spelling lists- your child’s teacher will be able to indicate which is the best one for your child. The children are encouraged to have a go at learning the spellings (which they will do in class) and to collect any donations from people they know to support the activity. Taking part is more important than the amount raised, but any donations will be gratefully received. The donations need to be returned by Monday 19th October at the latest. Thank you for your help.

On Thursday 22nd October from 9.30 – 11.45 am there will be an Open Morning for parents of children due to start school in September 2016. Please pass on the word to anyone you know who has a child born between 1st September 2011 and 31st August 2012. Please see the attached document for further information.

Table Top Sale

There will be a ‘Table Top Sale’ taking place at Horwich Parish Church Hall on 7th November 10 am to 3 pm. Samantha Davies and Rev Caroline Tracey are organising this event. All money raised from the hire of tables and refreshments will go to Horwich Parish School towards the cost of the new school building. The indoor tables have all been booked, but it is still possible to secure an outdoor table, for £6.00, which you can do even if you turn up on the day – no need to book in advance.

Our own PTA have decided to have a stall at the Table Top Sale, including fancy goods and a tombola. Please look out for further details, and if you are able to help on the day or before, please let us know.

Namibia appeal

The Namibia Committee are selling Quiz Sheets in order to raise funds for Namibia. These can be collected from Holy Trinity Church at any one of the Sunday services (8am, 9.15 am, 10.45am and 6.30 pm). 1st prize is a £5 book token – 2nd prize will be sweets from Fair Trade Stall in Church. All Quiz sheets to be posted in the Post Box in Church. Closing Date 25th October.

Volunteers

We value any support parents can provide to help our children. If you would like to offer your services for any time at all in the day please let Mrs Worthington know in the office or email Mrs Washington at awashington@horwichparish.net

Uniform Donations

We have been given a huge amount of school uniform in all age groups and sizes. We would love to pass it on to anyone who needs it for a small donation to the McMillan Nurses Charity. Please call in the office if you would like to have a look.

Friday Football

On Friday night our A and B football teams played away at Blackrod Church School. Both teams played brilliantly with the B team winning 3-0 and the A team winning 6-0. Well done to both teams.

Cross-Country

We wish our team the best of luck for tonight as they compete in the first competition of the year at Moss Bank Park. Watch this space for the results!

Update….they ran brilliantly with all boys coming in the top half of the field and an equally impressive run from the girls. Well done to Joel for coming 5th and to Freya for coming in 3rd.
